Low content books or no content books is one with little to no text inside. It can be completely comprised of lined, dotted, or even blank pages. Books like journals with prompts, notebooks, planners, and activity books are just a few examples. You can create and sell them all (easily!) with Kindle Direct Publishing.

Low Content Publishing

Before I jump into the different niches, let me go back a little for those of you who may not be familiar with Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing.

Amazon, arguably the world’s biggest online marketplace, has an arm of its business that offers writers a platform to sell their paperback books and audiobooks. It’s called Kindle Direct Publishing.

Years ago Amazon purchased a print-on-demand service for self-publishers called Create Space. In 2018, the two companies merged completely and Kindle Direct Publishing was born. KDP also operates as a print-on-demand model.

Writers create their book interior, upload a cover that they designed, and the book is created and shipped once someone makes a purchase. What’s exciting is the prospect that we can all create books for KDP, whether we’re authors or not!

Low content books and no content books with an Amazon KDP account make it possible for all of us to make passive income selling lined, dot grid, and even blank pages.

What is a Niche Book on Kindle Direct Publishing?

Any time you create a niche, you choose a target audience and then focus on marketing to that group. Your niche is your ideal customer and your products and marketing catered to that ideal customer.

A niche book is a book that is created with your niche in mind. It can be a book type that is used by a certain type of person or a book that people tend to buy for another type of person.

For example, you can focus on a niche like women who love to knit or a niche like coloring books for parents to buy for their children. Knowing who you are targeting makes it much easier to create marketing campaigns to reach your target.

How To Create Low Content Books

Low content and no content books are not much different than other books when it comes to creating them, at least when it comes to selling them on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing. You have to create the interior of the book and you have to design a cover. The main difference is the interior. Instead of writing text, you are designing the pages with lines, prompts, columns, or whatever else if necessary to complete the book.

How to Make Low Content Interiors for Kindle Direct Publishing

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing has specific page dimensions that must be followed to be able to upload an interior. The size of the actual page has to be correct, taking into consideration the gutter on the inside of the page and the bleed on the page. The gutter is the space on your page that enables you to be able to see the full page despite the spine down the middle.

The bleed is the space on the edge of the page that allows your lines or words to not get cut off when the book is made. If the measurements aren’t correct KDP will reject your book. They give you a chance to fix it but it’s easier to do it right the first time.

What Software Can I Use to Create Interiors?

GET A FREE TRIAL WITH CANVA

If you are familiar with design software like Canva you can create an interior yourself and download the file as a PDF Print document. You can also use Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, or any other program that allows you to create your design and save it as a PDF.

If you are not comfortable designing at all you can either pay someone to create an interior for you on sites like Fiverr, or you can purchase an interior from places like Creative Fabrica.

Low Content Book Templates for Kindle Direct Publishing

Another option is a combination of the two choices. Programs like Bookbolt and Tangent Templates offer individual pages that you can use to create the book you want without having to start from scratch.

If you aren’t a creator this is a great option because you can create a unique interior without having to do the hard lifting.

Sure, buying a pre-made template is much easier but you run the risk of selling a book that’s identical to someone else’s.

If you are able to customize it, even just a little, you can set yourself apart from your competition.

Designing Book Covers for Kindle Direct Publishing

You will have to make or purchase a cover and upload it. You can use design elements and fonts from websites like Creative Fabrica or Creative Market and Canva to create the cover.

Creators on platforms like Etsy, Fiverr, and Upwork create covers so hiring a professional is also an option. Just keep the cost in mind.

With KDP you are paid a royalty so be sure your expenses don’t get out of control before you have a process in place that you think will generate revenue. Just like the interiors, you also have to make sure your measurements are correct or your book will be rejected when you try to upload it.

How To Get Your Book Found on Kindle Direct Publishing

You can pay for ads on Kindle Direct Publishing but you want to try to rank organically, for free, nothing, nada, zip, zilch, zero. Here’s how: Think of how you search for things on the internet. Let’s say you want to look for a blank recipe book on Amazon, what do you do? You may type in the term “blank recipe book” in the search bar.

As you can see, other terms show up. You would normally keep typing or select something that self-populates, right? Well, this is how other people search too.

The key is to find a book that people are looking for that is not being sold by too many other people.  In other words, we want a book that has a high search volume with a low level of competition. This gives you the best chance for success.

If you search for a book in your niche and it brings up 123,000 results, you know this is a highly competitive search term that would make it almost impossible for you to be found. Your challenge is to find a search term that brings up results in the hundred ideally.

The other piece to this is that you want to not only find a more narrow niche but one where people are looking. If you choose a niche that’s too narrow, chances are you won’t be found.

Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing Categories

When you list your book you use the book title, categories, keywords, and descriptions that will help you get noticed. You choose the title, keywords, and description, but the categories are set by KDP.

When you create your book you will have to select two categories that best represent the type of book you have. The problem is, sometimes there are no “perfect” categories that match your book exactly.

The best way to deal with this is to unlock additional categories so you can assign your book to the perfect category. How?

Go to Amazon’s home page and go to the books tab on the left side. You can select that tab and keep looking until you find the category you think would work best for your book. Once you’ve found it, record the path you took to get there.

For example, I’m looking for a book on criminal forensic. I start with books, then I go to law, then criminal, then forensics. My path would look something like this:  books>law>criminal>forensics. You would copy this path and send that in a contact form to Kindle Direct Publishing

Click on the Contact Us button at the bottom of the page and select the option that reads: Amazon Product Page and Expedited Distribution. Then select the option: Update Amazon Categories.

A form will pop up allowing you to add in your book’s ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number) and the category paths you just found. They will add your books to the categories you request within a few days. Check your related email for confirmation. Easy peasy.

Perhaps the best thing about this practice is, not only will KDP add your book to two categories, you can add your book to many more categories, greatly improving your chances of being found.
